The practical value is not the novelty of asking a fridge what is for dinner. It is the possibility of removing one of the most annoying gaps between buying food and cooking it: inventory blindness.

Most food waste does not happen because people enjoy throwing away money and cilantro. It happens because ingredients disappear behind other ingredients, leftovers become anonymous containers and the optimistic produce purchase made on Sunday meets its soft, damp end on Thursday.

A refrigerator that maintains a reasonably accurate inventory could help people search for meals based on what they already own, spot ingredients that should be used first and build a shopping list without requiring a full archaeological survey of the crisper drawers.

GE Profile’s Smart 4-Door French-Door Refrigerator with Kitchen Assistant approaches the same problem with several tools working together. One system attempts to understand the messy reality of a household refrigerator; the other gives consumers a deliberate way to log many of the things they purchase.

Neither approach will be flawless. A camera may struggle with leftovers in opaque containers. A barcode can identify a jar of mustard, but not how much mustard remains. Households will still need to correct mistakes, label certain items or accept that their refrigerator’s understanding of dinner is more “helpful intern” than omniscient chef.

Still, this is one of the most credible uses of AI in the kitchen. A useful food inventory connects directly to meal planning, purchasing and waste reduction. That is a much stronger proposition than putting another streaming screen three feet from the television.

Computer vision is watching dinner so you do not have to

The oven is also learning to see.

The KitchenAid Smart Double Wall Oven with Intelligent Cooking Camera recognizes supported foods such as whole chicken, bread, cookies, bacon and pizza. KitchenAid says its Doneness Detection system monitors cooking progress and adjusts time as needed, while a Live Look-in feature lets the cook view food remotely.

This is more consequential than an oven camera used only for checking whether the cheese has crossed from beautifully browned into the carbon-based afterlife. When computer vision is paired with temperature control and a model trained to identify stages of cooking, an oven can potentially respond to the food rather than simply obeying a timer.

Traditional recipes translate sensory cues into standardized instructions: bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes, roast until browned, cook until the center reaches a target temperature. Experienced cooks know that the clock is only a suggestion. Ingredient temperature, portion size, moisture, elevation, pan material and the oven itself can all affect the result.

An appliance that monitors visible changes and adjusts the process could narrow the gap between the recipe and the actual food. That would be particularly valuable for less confident cooks, but it could also help experienced cooks coordinate a meal without hovering in front of the oven door like an anxious stage parent.

Bosch is pushing the idea further into conversational guidance. At CES 2026, the company introduced Bosch Cook AI, which it describes as agentic artificial intelligence designed to provide personalized cooking help and “pro-chef skills.” The important word is not AI. It is agentic: a system meant to interpret a goal, consider context and help carry out multiple steps rather than respond to a single isolated command.

That could mean adapting instructions to the ingredients and equipment available, coordinating appliance settings or walking a cook through a technique in real time. It also creates a much higher standard for accuracy. A chatbot that makes a mediocre movie recommendation is irritating. A cooking assistant that mishandles temperature, allergens or food safety is something else entirely.

The strongest systems will make their limits clear, distinguish between creative suggestions and safety-critical guidance, and explain what they are changing. “Trust me, I’m an oven” is not sufficient disclosure.

Precision cooking is moving inside the appliance

Before investing, I would ask five questions.
